The Makeup Show NYC 2014: Recap

In it's 9th year, The Makeup Show NYC was held this year on May 4 and 5 with 70,000 attendees; over 120 beauty brands; 70 keynotes; hand-on workshops; seminars; kit focus and career classes, and the debut of The Makeup Show Icon Gallery.
In our 9th year, we wanted to bring attendees something new to The Makeup Show NYC.   A few of these additions were the debut of The Makeup Show Icon Gallery, additional exhibitors and classes, and return of the Career Fair.  I’m always looking for new ways to inspire and educate the pro community and these things truly made this year the most inspiring yet.   We are now looking forward to bringing this same growth and inspiration to our other shows in Chicago, Orlando, and the debut of Dallas in September.” Shelly Taggar, Owner of The Makeup Show

The Makeup Show NYC kicked off with a gala on the evening of Friday, May 2nd where 250 party-goers mixed and mingled with makeup peers and industry insiders.   Over $5,500 was raised from a portion of the doors proceeds and silent auctions, for charity: water, an organization that brings clean, safe drinking water to people in developing countries.
I unfortunately did not make it to the event. You can read more about the gala at the Makeup Show blog, HERE!!!

On May 3rd, the Makeup Show had a Bloggers Preview, hosted by celebrity makeup artist, Mr. James Vincent, also the Director of Artistry for The Makeup Show, introduced us to the new makeup products that will be debuting at the show. Some of these products are the following:

  • Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics - Stained Glosses
  • Make Up Forever - Aqua Matic Eyes
  • Sephora - Pro Makeup Brush Collection
  • Smashbox - Be Legendary Lip Glosses
  • Armour Beauty - all vegan "Armour V" lip glosses

And so many more others... He also mentioned the new brands that will be at the show for the first time, such as Jouer Cosmetics, Ardency Inn, Sephora, Gorgeous Cosmetics, Black UP Cosmetics, Ashunta Sheriff Beauty, Charlotte Tillbury,  Surrat Beauty, Vincent Longo, BreakUps to Makeups and many others.

The Makeup Show NYC featured over 120 top beauty brands including Diamond Sponsor MAKE UP FOR EVER, Platinum Sponsor Crown Brush and Temptu PRO, Silver Sponsors Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, NARS, Stila, Supporting Sponsor Smashbox, Alcone, Pinnacle Cosmetics, INGLOT, The Powder Group and On Makeup Magazine.

The Gala, Bloggers Preview and the show itself was held at the Metropolitan Pavilion building located at 125 West 18th St New York, NY. As soon as you walk into the event space, be prepared to take all the makeup in and the huge crowd that could be overwhelming to some. I was really not sure where to start but I also wanted to make sure to visit every booth there, network and learn more about any old and any other products they are introducing for the first time at the show.

If you need a break from shopping, a lot of scheduled seminars, hands on workshops and keynotes were happening as well at different stages during the two day event. Some of the big guest keynotes this year were Troy Surrat, Charlotte Tillbury, Kabuki, Alice Lane and so many other very well known makeup artists.

Over 10 of the best makeup artists in the industry took the stage to bring a flood of inspiration over the pro-community, including Nick Barose, Troy Surratt, Kabuki, Jake Bailey, Charlotte Tilbury, Alice Lane, Ashunta Sheriff, and more.  These artists are responsible for beautifying the faces of models, celebs, and musicians on the cover of magazines to music videos and red carpets.

I do suggest to plan ahead as all schedules and the floor plan are all posted on The Makeup Show website (themakeupshow.com) weeks before the show so you can divide your time from makeup shopping and going to the seminars.

This year marked the debut of The Makeup Show’s Artist Kit Building Series.  The Makeup Show Kit Focus Feature Area was designed to give show attendees the opportunity to compare and contrast products from the same category by looking, feeling and revealing the facts and fundamentals that separate one from another.   This series proved to be a valuable addition to the show as each of the classes nearly sold out.

Lastly, the Makeup Show debuts their new Makeup Icon Gallery. So for the very first showing of the gallery, the Makeup Show honored Kevyn Aucoin.

“The Makeup Show Icon Gallery; Beauty and Soul” made its New York debut and featured never-before-seen-pieces from Kevyn Aucoin’s life work, celebrating his dedication to the art of makeup.  Shelly Taggar, owner of The Makeup Show, curated the gallery.
